A small expedition consisting of two men (one a brainy scientist and the other a brawny adventure type) and three women (a nosy photographer, the rugged guy's jealous girlfriend, and the spoiled daughter of the expedition's financier) arrive at a mysterious jungle location by a shallow river to investigate native legends of voodoo practice, carried out by a group of sorcerers worshipping some sort of leopard god.
They are soon greeted by one of the locals, who offers to help them by offering his services as a guide. He takes several of the group to a secluded clearing not far from their base camp, where the rituals were originally performed. The last known occurrence of this ritual, said to invoke their demon leopard spirit, was approximately 100 years prior, when a young missionary woman (named Agnes in the movie promo materials) was abducted from her group, and violently sacrificed. This event actually serves as the film's opening, in a brilliant sequence that is both shockingly violent and quite atmospheric. Her would-be rescuers arrive too late, and witnessing her lifeless body upon the sorcerers' altar, open fire and decimate the entire group in an act of revenge. Moments later, in a sudden and horrifying take, the lifeless head of Agnes springs up and around in its former resting place, and comes alive, emitting a series of ear piercing shrieks. Agnes now has noticeably large and sharp white fangs, and possesses an expression of total evil.
Back to where we were though...Carol, the photographer, impressed with the stories that their guide has told them, ventures out on her own. She takes a series of photographs of the site, and of a leopard that appears from nowhere which has been tracking the expedition members. As the storyline progresses, the sorcerers return to hold their ceremony once again, rising from their shallow rock-covered graves, along with the movie's first victim, head reattached, and is now clothed in a rather skimpy, sexy leopard print bikini sort of outfit. Not quite sure who stitched that for her, but they apparently ran out of fabric. Calamity ensues, people's underlying motives are exposed, members of the party begin disappearing, and more leopard vampires appear. Prancing about and running through the jungle in a rather strangely executed slow motion display, it is not unlike the movement of Ossorio's 'Blind Dead' horseman. As the human party dwindles down to a final few, they must figure out a way to stop the sorcerers before it's too late...The movie's ending, while not totally unexpected, provides one last little creepy twist. |
