While perhaps being more than a little silly at times, Night of the Sorcerers definitely deserved better, and still stands to this day as one of the more oddball titles to come out of 70's Spanish horror. 

Although it definitely is not a "great" horror film on the level of Ossorio's debut film (or many of his later efforts, for that matter), there is much to enjoy and recommend.  While the effectiveness of the sorcerers themselves is questionable and a VERY mixed bag, the scenes in which the clearing comes to "life" evoke an eerie style that is best described as part hallucinatory and part "Scooby Doo Mysteries".  Scenes in which shrunken heads mysteriously appear on poles, for example, could have come directly from the children's classic cartoon of the late 60's early 70's.  The characters of the film are pretty stereotypical...You have the adventurer, his bossy girlfriend, a bitchy rich girl, her girlfriend (is she her 'girl FRIEND' or her 'GIRLFRIEND'?), a professor and...hey, wait a minute, take a look at this:

ANYWAY, it's important to note that vital to enjoyment on any level, one should definitely 'check your brain at the door'.  It is hard to believe, for example, that a woman who just been savagely and brutally whipped, mauled and then bitten would still be wearing white go-go boots as she is placed upon the altar, for example, and some of the action events on display happen just a little too conveniently.

Beyond that, and as long as one is able to get past the violent whipping (and most likely raping) of the ceremony victims (each one is lavishly whipped, beaten and then probably raped in rather glorious close-up), this can be a very fun film to watch, and  for me it is way too over-the-top and comic-book like to be taken too seriously or to find it inappropriate.  The film has become somewhat of a minor cult film, and despite its idiosyncrasies it has found its share of viewers and fans--some love it for its camp value, others appreciating it on deeper levels.
