Throughout the years following its theatrical run and televised American premiere, the movie was shown on television on rare occasions, mostly on late night "creature feature" types of programs, obviously in heavily edited form. While I do not have statistics or broadcast history available, I sincerely doubt it was shown more than five or six times in the U.S. after its initial debut. It is entirely possible that it was more frequently seen overseas. With the advent of home video, many smaller labels acquired the distribution rights to a variety of foreign and independently produced horror films. Night of the Sorcerers found its way to home video here in the United States through one such label, Unicorn Video. Specializing in very obscure titles (anyone remember Warlock Moon?), annoyingly limited availability and rather funky, artist rendered video covers, their titles were manufactured and shipped in oversized hard plastic cases, and although were seldom seen in chain stores such as Blockbuster or National Video, were often found on shelves of wonderful mom-&-pop locally owned video stores, along with more of their big-boxed friends. The movie's official VHS release (which was supposedly but arguably uncut as a Spanish language release and a VERY heavily cut English dub) eventually went out of print, and as more and more stores began selling off their old stock and keeping only the top studio hits among their back catalog, titles such as Night of the Sorcerers soon disappeared from sight. Several smaller companies have released this title since the official Unicorn release. Most of these releases were simply horrible transfers, with an unknown amount of footage cut out. About the only way to obtain a decent and virtually/totally uncut version was to locate it on the internet. Several online collector sources offered a high quality version on DVD-R, the best of which was an apparent transfer from an overseas laser disc. In February 2000, although I am still needing to verify exactly what this event was, it appears that Noche de los Brujos was actually re-released in Spain, or at least released as part of some sort of festival, where it was met with success, taking in over 16 million Euro according to the IMDB. This fairly successful showing is proof positive that sometimes things which are not met with approval initially do find their audience and support eventually. Approximately two years ago, an official U.S. release was announced, as part of a small series of Spanish horror titles. After claiming poor sales on the first title chosen for release however, the company withdrew its plans to release further product. Due to some key advertising, these releases were somewhat highly anticipated. Once the releases were cancelled, there was some initial public discussion as to what exactly had happened and why, but as that eventually subsided, Night of the Sorcerers sank once more from whatever level of public consciousness it had obtained with the DVD announcement. The good news for fans of the film is that Night of the Sorcerers / Noche de Los Brujos is one of a large package of Spanish horror titles purchased for distribution on DVD by Deimos Entertainment. They have been busily working on the release of this exciting series for the past year, finalizing their plans for the best market coverage possible. Please keep checking my site for updates on the releases of not only Night of the Sorcerers, but of their entire series. |
